We are proud to present "the Queen of cabaret and supper club performers" (Show Music) in the intimate surroundings of Cleo's in N.Y. One-on-one with you. No Cover. No Minimum. Just maximum music from "the grande dame of popular song." - John S. Wilson, The New York Times
The vocal artistry of Mabel Mercer is timeless, lovely and heartbreaking. Her unique interpretations give new meaning and dimensions to some of the greatest songs ever written. "Mabel Mercer taught me everything I know," said Frank Sinatra in McCall's Magazine. Others who were inspired by her and attended her performances continually were Nat "King" Cole, Billy Holiday, Margaret Whiting and Cole Porter.
HER CAREER IN EUROPE: Mabel Mercer was born in Staffordshire, England in 1900 and left a Manchester convent school at the age of 14 to join her aunt in a vaudeville and music hall tour of Britain and the Continent. Better known as a dancer, she later developed her singing talents and by the 1930s, she became the toast of Paris, where she introduced her inimitable style of cabaret singing, which beguiled such steadfast admirers as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Cole Porter and the Prince of Wales.
ON TO AMERICA: The outbreak of WWII brought her to New York and a now legendary series of supper club, nightclub engagements, and recordings which have become collectors' items. Among the clubs she made her own were Le Ruban Bleu, Tony's (7 years), her own Byline Room (5 years) and two years at the RSVP. Then it was on to the Carlyle and St. Regis Hotels, concert triumphs, and record-breaking appearances across America.
